I booked this hotel for 6 nights from September 1-7 which included 2 additional nights on a second reservation. The occasion for this stay was having business at a local union hall in the CBD.
Those nights totaled an average of $93.29 each after tax and all charges. The Hampton Inn New Orleans Convention Center has an Expedia rating of 9.0 from 1628 reviews. Check the Expedia rates for your dates.
I chose this hotel based on price and because I’m near requalifying for Diamond status. Having previously stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in the next block I was already familiar with the location.
Hampton Inn New Orleans Convention Center Location
Unsurprisingly, this hotel is directly next to the city’s very large convention center, making it an outstanding choice as a convention hotel. The location is also very close to the port of New Orleans and cruise passengers will find it convenient for embarking and disembarking.
If your trip doesn’t fit one of those two categories you might not enjoy the location at all.

The Warehouse district is full of historical warehouse buildings dating from a time when the shipping industry was very different than what it is today. The area is now an arts district and many of the warehouses have been converted to lofts and apartments. While you can walk to the French Quarter without too much trouble or take the riverfront streetcar, the location is generally not convenient. Most people who wish to stay in the CBD will want to be closer to Poydras Street.
Hampton Inn New Orleans Convention Center Property
This is a very large hotel comprising two old warehouses and connected by a newly created hallway and courtyard, which is home to a popular patio seating area and a swimming pool.
The second floor in the west building is tens of thousands of square feet on convention and event spaces. The basement of the east building houses the fitness center and guest laundry.

Parking in a valet garage is available for $44 a night. However, this location is so remote that there’s free street parking available beginning in the next block. Going toward Tchoupatoulas Street there are several blocks of uncrowded free parking. If you cross the interstate parking is totally unregulated on the other side. If I were traveling by car this hotel would be a top choice for me. I’d happily park on the street.
I’ve also had good luck renting garage spaces in the CBD from services like SpotHero for much less than $44 a day. A quick check shows spots for next weekend under $50 for the whole weekend.
Hampton Inn New Orleans Convention Center Guest Rooms
This is a large hotel with a lot of rooms and a lot of room types. They’ve got studio suites and full suites with kitchens, some of which include hot tubs.
Going by the regular one-king room I received I have to imagine those suites are pretty nice. Even the regular rooms do a great job of feeling sort of like a studio apartment. The foldout sofa bed is comfortable and a big improvement over just a chair. The room is really nicely finished and tastefully decorated with a very functional design. My only criticism is that the lamps aren’t bright and the room is fairly dark at night.

I enjoyed the bathroom here with its hot, powerful shower and liked the room enough to extend my stay over the weekend. I’m a little surprised this is a Hampton Inn location as it feels more like an Embassy Suites. Being an inner city location it’s different from a typical Hampton and has an elegant feel throughout.
About The Warehouse District
There’s no getting around the fact that this location is inconvenient for the typical New Orleans visitor. Still, it’s not all bad. Staying here means you’re committing to significant extra walking but if you don’t mind that it has its advantages as well.
If you start walking west you’ll cross under the interstate immediately and be in the Garden District on Magazine Street. If you stick by the river you can take the shortest route to the French Quarter. The Saint Charles Avenue Streetcar is only a few blocks from the hotel and you can board it at Lee Circle.

The Warehouse District isn’t without its own charms and is mostly clean and quiet making it pleasant to walk through. There aren’t a ton of restaurants and amenities here but there are a few, and they’re every bit as authentic and charming as bars and restaurants anywhere else in the city.

Bottom Line
Rates during my stay in the off season were exceptionally low. If staying here can save you $40-50 dollars a night it can certainly be worth walking a little further, particularly with free street parking nearby.
But if the difference between this hotel and one near Canal Street is only a few dollars it’s much more convenient to be over there for the typical visitor.
Having visited New Orleans many times proximity to the French Quarter is not important to me at all and I thought this hotel was fantastic and an unbelievable bargain. Check the rates for your dates and see if you can get lucky on price.
