If you’re looking for a hotel room in Medellín there’s a good chance you want to be close to the beating heart of El Poblado: the Provenza nightlife district. Located right on Calle 10, Hotel Dix Medellín is right in the middle of everything. But is it too close for comfort? Let’s take a look.

I booked the Hotel Dix Medellín for 5 nights from July 29 to August 3, Tue-Sun.
Those nights totaled up to $98.69 each after tax. Hotel Dix Medellín has an Expedia rating of 9.0 from 934 reviews. Check the Expedia rates for your dates.
I chose this hotel for location and price.
Hotel Dix Medellín Location
After staying a few days up in the mountains I wanted to be back in the heart of El Poblado where everything is walkable.
The location of this hotel is really good, with the metro accessible on foot and and cabs and Ubers easy to find day and night. However after being in the city for a few weeks I’m growing considerably tired of all the Street People found in El Poblado. Everywhere you turn there’s someone sleeping on the sidewalk, trying to sell you cocaine, spreading out a blanket full of junky beaded jewelry, prostituting, shoving a menu in your face, doing some song and dance routine, etc. Fending them off all day every day is annoying as Hell.

The location of the Hotel Dix Medellín is particularly loud. I was able to sleep at night but from morning until about midnight there’s constant noise outside, including a troupe of guys dancing to amplified music at the intersection for tips daily. It’s considerably louder than the Hunters Concept just a couple blocks away on the same street.
Hotel Dix Medellín Property
This is a small hotel and they do the best they can with what they have. The hallways are surprisingly nice with an open central stairway instead of a concrete stairwell in a corner. There’s a tiny gym on the rooftop and a number of chairs and sun loungers up there. The rooftop was never crowded during my stay but there’s no shade up there at midday. It’s really only enjoyable during mornings and evenings, being quite dark at night.
I didn’t even try the breakfast. It looked fairly unimpressive although it is included and coffee is served until 9:30. Checkout is a very generous 1:00 pm.
I found the staff to be quite pushy. For instance they insist on showing you up to your room and they knocked on my door several times with the do not disturb posted.
Hotel Dix Medellín Guest Rooms
The room was fine. Just okay. As already mentioned, quite noisy. There was work going on in the next room. The bed is as firm as it can possibly be and the desk is too small for serious work, although there’s co-working space provided in the lobby.
Bathroom was fine and the shower was quite good. Room lacked a microwave or hot water source (tea kettle, coffee maker). The fridge is taken up with minibar items.

The rooms are fine but they feel a little cheap and plain, even compared with other local hotels at the same price point. Wifi here is substandard with very slow uploads.
About El Poblado
The area around Lleras Park is a world class nighlife destination, with people coming from all over to enjoy top notch hospitality and Latin rhythm in the clubs. There are dozens of dining options in the neighborhood including Colombian places with extremely generous portions.
Hotels, hostels and co-working spaces fill out the neighborhood. It’s quite popular with digital nomads and Latin tourists, although Americans make up less of the tourist trade than you’d expect.

El Poblado is overall very safe, although if you stay out too late and get too drunk some very bad things can happen here. Overall the area is like living a California lifestyle on a Colombian budget. It’s worth the trip even if you can only stay for the weekend.

Bottom Line
For $100 a night you can either find better rooms nearby or save some money on a room of similar quality. I’d stay here again but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
Check around and find something that looks a little nicer than this. Chances are it’ll be nicer when you arrive.
